Ko-fi helps me keep going
Living with chronic illness can feel like a constant balancing act—physically, emotionally, and mentally. There’s the pain, the appointments, the symptoms you can’t explain, and the grief you don’t always know how to talk about.
For me, journaling became one of the only ways I could sort through the fog, frustration, and quiet heartbreak of it all. It was a space where I didn’t have to pretend. A space where I could feel seen, even when no one else was watching. Some days I wrote paragraphs. Other days, just a word or two. But every time, it helped.
Whether you’re new to journaling or looking to deepen your self-reflection, I’ve created this list of gentle prompts just for you. No pressure. No expectations. Just a soft place to land. And if you’d like something printable to keep by your bed or in your flare-up kit, you can grab my Spoonie Journal Prompts download here:
Before we dive into the prompts, here’s a little reminder: Journaling isn’t about productivity or perfectly worded insights. It’s about release. When you’re living with daily symptoms, it’s easy to suppress your emotions just to get through the day. But those emotions don’t disappear—they settle in your body, your mind, your heart.
Journaling gives them a place to go.
It can help you:
Process medical trauma or burnout
Track symptoms or emotional patterns
Grieve the “old you”
Practice self-compassion
Reconnect with your sense of self
You don’t have to write daily. Even one honest moment on paper can create a shift.
What’s something I miss about the person I was before chronic illness?
What would I say to that version of myself if I could sit with them right now?
What part of my identity feels the most changed—and what part has stayed the same?
What is something I’ve lost that still hurts to think about?
What is something I’ve lost that has unexpectedly made space for something else?
What emotions come up for me before or after doctor appointments?
Write a letter to a provider who didn’t listen to you—say what you couldn’t say then.
What would it look like to feel safe and believed in a medical setting?
How do I protect my energy around medical conversations or decisions?
What boundaries do I wish I could set around my care?
What has my body carried me through lately?
What would I say to a friend going through what I’m feeling right now?
What are three things I did right today, no matter how small?
What’s one thing I need that I’ve been afraid to ask for?
What would it look like to treat myself with softness instead of pressure?
If you’d like something you can keep by your bed, tuck into your healing journal, or use on low-energy days, I’ve also created a printable journaling sheet with 6 gentle prompts to help you reflect and release without pressure. You can download it here:
Spoonie Journal Prompts – Printable on Ko-fi
Perfect for flare-up days, emotional resets, or just when you need a quiet moment with yourself.
Your story matters—even the messy, wordless parts.
Even the days when you can’t find the energy to write. Even when all you manage is a scribble, a tearstained page, or a half-finished sentence that trails off. That still counts. That still means something.
You don’t have to journal every day. You don’t have to fill every page. This isn’t homework. This isn’t a test. It’s a tool—something soft and steady to hold onto when everything else feels like too much. You deserve a space where you can just be. Not the version of you that explains. Not the one that pushes through. Just you—unfiltered, unmasked, and fully allowed to feel whatever is true in that moment.
Let journaling become your quiet companion. A space where the pressure melts, where your truth has room to breathe, and where healing can happen—not all at once, but gently, over time. Because your thoughts matter. Your voice matters. You matter.
And even in the silence, even in the stillness, your story is unfolding in beautiful, brave ways.
